Queensbury wins B wrestling title

BALLSTON SPA -- Queensbury captured its 17th straight sectional title Saturday and needed a team effort like never before to win it.

The Spartans didn't have a single champion and only three wrestlers made the finals, but the overall effort gave them 198 points and first place in the Section II Class B Wrestling Tournament at Ballston Spa. Second-place La Salle Institute was close behind with 187 points.

South Glens Falls finished eighth in the meet and Glens Falls was ninth. The Indians had two champions.

C.J. Sullivan, Joey Whitaker and Adam Thorpe were the only Queensbury wrestlers to make the championship finals, and all lost. But the Spartans did well in wrestlebacks and amassed enough points on their way through the brackets to win the meet.

John Payne, Zack Colvin, Andy Mija and Tony Osborne won consolation matches, helping the Spartans' cause.

Glens Falls came away with two champions -- Greg Girard at 130 and Anthony Catoggio at 275. Both of them won by decision in the finals.

Charles Naylor was a runner-up for South Glens Falls at 96 pounds.

Stenglein leads Colonie

COLONIE -- The story of Colonie wrestler Matt Stenglein and coach Joe Gaurdino has irony.

When Guardino became an assistant coach six years ago, Stenglein started competing on the varsity level. During that time, both Guardino and Steinglein wanted to become champions.

That became reality Saturday when Stenglein helped Gaurdino guide the Colonie wrestling team to the Section II Class A title against 12 other schools at CBA.

Stenglein, competing as the top seed at 130 pounds, defeated Niskayuna's Ryan Barbara in a 5-2 decision. His victory was the only win for the Garnet Raiders. Four other Colonie wrestlers were second in their weight classes.

Steinglein, along with the top four finishers in each class, will be heading to the Glens Falls Civic Center next Saturday to determine who will be going to the state championships in Syracuse.

For Stenglein, this will mark his sixth and final appearance. He is 32-1 this season and 215-23 in his career.

"I am really confident about next Saturday,'' Stenglein said, "but it's not going to be easy. As a Class A champion, I am going to be the guy everyone is going to try to shoot down.''

Colonie's victory did not come as a surprise for Gaurdino because his team has been competing well against the top teams in the section throughout the season.

"We are a solid team,'' Guardino said. "We have finished within the top three or four in seven touraments this season.''

Saratoga's Brandon Polcare will be making his third appearance in the sectional championships. He was one of three Saratoga wrestlers who came away with a victory at 112 pounds. In his two prior trips to Glens Falls, Polcare placed second.

Brendan Polcare, Brandon's brother, was a winner at 119.

Other winners included CBA's Kurt Johnson and Tom DePalma, Burnt Hills' Joe MacFarlane and Jason Steele, Columbia's Ryan French and Anthony Cohen, Shenendehowa's Keith Bernard and Phil McGeough, Niskayuna's Matt Gunthinger, Saratoga's Justin Pesta and Guilderland's Nick Hawrylchak. CLASS B

Queensbury took its 17th consecutive title despite not having a wrestler win an individual weight class.

LaSalle's John Gregg will have another opportunity for a state title after he came away with a 11-3 decision over Queensbury's Adam Thopre at 215. Gregg has finished third in two previous state appearances. CLASS C

As host of the Class C championships, Hudson Falls defended the title from 11 other schools.

Scott Latterell and Bryan Steele will have another attempt at the state title if both qualify at the Civic Center. Steele was a runner-up while Latterell finished fifth in last year's state championships.

Postseason starts for area wrestlers

By TODD DYBAS

dybas@poststar.com

The road to the Glens Falls Civic Center begins this weekend with four Section II wrestling tournaments.

The top four finishers in each weight class at each tourney will earn the right to compete in the Section II Finals at the Civic Center next week. Schools will also compete for team titles at the four locations -- Class A at CBA, Class B at Ballston Spa, Class C at Hudson Falls and Class D at Warrensburg.

Class D may be the most competitive bracket of the four. Corinth controlled the Wasaren League all season and was rewarded with three No. 1 seeds. The tournament starts today at 5:15 p.m., with semifinals schedule for 10 a.m. Saturday and the finals slated for around 7 p.m.

"This is one of those season-long goals," Corinth coach Dick Whitaker said. "It's something we strive for from day one. This is the culmination of the season, team-wise, and we pride ourselves on having a strong team bond."

Starting right at the top, the Tomahawks' Jason Shippee (16-9) is No. 1 at 96 pounds. Shippee is followed by three other local wrestlers in Justin Hunt of Salem, Vance Plante of Hadley-Luzerne and Haley Grace of Warrensburg.

Jason D'Angelo (17-10) gets the nod for Corinth as No. 1 at 125 and Nate Baker (23-6) is No. 1 at 215 only because Warrensburg's Zach Monforte (25-1) moved to the 275-pound weight class, where he is seeded second.

Corinth will no doubt be the team favorite with its move to Class D this postseason. The Tomahawks have three No. 1 seeds and are projected to finish in the top four in 12 weight classes. Galway is the only other school with more than one top seed.

"We're a solid team of good wrestlers," Whitaker said. "We don't have that automatic champion."

Whitehall will be represented by Dan Bishop (21-9), the No. 1 seed at 103 pounds. The Railroaders' only other wrestler in the top four is Ethan Atwood (16-11) who is seeded fourth at 145.

In the Class B tournament at Ballston Spa, which starts at 5 p.m. today, Queensbury will be gunning for its 17th straight Class B title. The Spartans have the depth to make it happen despite not having a No. 1 seed in the tourney.

"We've always had at least one or two wrestlers as top seeds," Queensbury coach Jim Hubert said.

Joey Whitaker (28-5) is the Spartans highest-ranked wrestler, coming in as the No. 2 seed at 125. Queensbury has wrestlers in eight weight classes seeded in the top four.

Pressure to win the tournament is nothing new to Hubert and his Queensbury team.

"We use it as a motivator. I think it is positive pressure and we have used it that way all year," Hubert said. "You have to turn it into something positive."

Wrestling will resume Saturday at 10:30 a.m. with the finals tentatively scheduled for 7:15 p.m.

Queensbury's Adam Thorpe, who know all about pressure and thrives in it, is the No. 2 seed at 215 pounds behind John Gregg of LaSalle. Gregg has finished third in the state each of the last two years.

Glens Falls' resurgent program received two No. 1 seeds. Greg Girard (27-2) is the top man at 130 and big Anthony Catoggio is the No. 1 seed at 275.

Charles Naylor (27-1) is South Glens Falls highest ranked representative, coming in as the No. 2 seed at 96 pounds. Mike Brownell (19-9) is the fourth seed at 112 pounds for the Bulldogs.

Hudson Falls has earned four No. 1 seeds in the Class C tournament that will be held at Hudson Falls on Saturday starting at 9:30 a.m. with the finals projected to be at 6:30 p.m.

The Tigers No. 1's are seventh-grader Corey Barber at 96 pounds, undefeated Scott Latterell at 135, Ryan Barber at 140 and Brian Steele at 189. Ben Brewer is seeded second at 215, Dave LaFay is second at 119 and Damian Kilmartin is second at 103.

After sending three wrestlers to the state tournament in Syracuse a year ago, Hudson Falls coach George Chickanis is trying to keep his athletes focused on the task at hand.

"Guys will be looking at the bracket and figuring out I have to wrestle this guy in the third round," Chickanis said, "and some upstart comes and knocks them out."

If the seeds hold, Hudson Falls should win the team title, even with six wrestlers in the tournament who are freshmen or younger. The Tigers will be challenged by Cobleskill, Schuylerville and Broadalbin-Perth.

Schuylerville's Justin Bills is the No. 1 seed at 125. Jesse Williams will represent the Black Horses as the No. 2 seed at 112.

Saratoga earned four No. 1 seeds for the upcoming Class A wrestling tournament which will take place at Christian Brothers Academy in Colonie today starting at 5 p.m. and Saturday.

Saratoga's four No. 1 seeds are: Brendan Polcare at 119, Justin Pesta at 152, Mike Robinson at 189 and Matt Cowles at 275.

The Blue Streaks' Brandon Polcare is the second seed at 112.

Matt Stenglein, who has won 212 matches for Colonie, is No. 1 at 130.
